Example of Paper Publication for Participating in EFD-CFD Workshop

The field of fluid dynamics, which I majored in, can be broadly divided into experimental and computational fluid dynamics. In the aerospace and aerodynamics field where I worked, there is also a division between experimental fluid dynamics and computational fluid dynamics. However, these two fields are not in opposition to each other; they collaborate to advance the field of study. In order to promote collaboration between these two areas, several individuals took the lead in organizing a workshop under the Korean Society for Aeronautical & Space Sciences. The workshop is called the “EFD-CFD Workshop” and more information can be found here.

The workshop seems to have drawn inspiration from the workshops organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). It involved selecting a common fluid dynamics problem and having researchers from experimental fluid dynamics and computational fluid dynamics individually conduct experiments and simulations to compare and match their results. Essentially, the experimental data was considered as the reference solution, and the discussions focused on how well the computational analyses matched the experimental results.

Of course, a conference itself is a place where researchers present their findings and engage in lively discussions. However, due to differences in how each researcher interpreted the problem, it was challenging to compare their results. Therefore, the workshop aimed to standardize the problem and compare the interpretations to determine which computational analysis was more accurate and identify common characteristics.

The workshop consisted of a total of five cases, and I chose to work on the third case, which involved analyzing a winged body in the transonic regime.

This workshop has been conducted at aerospace academic conferences for about 2-3 years since around 2014, and the collected papers were published as a special issue in a scholarly journal in March 2017. I had the opportunity to present and attend the workshop, and I was able to contribute my paper to the special issue, which I observed with great interest.
